The Globeleq Ikamva Consortium has been selected as preferred bidder to deliver six wind and six solar power projects in South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPPP) 5th bidding round. The Consortium, of which Globeleq is a majority partner, will build clean and renewable power projects in the country, totalling 1,274 MW of generation capacity.
The solar projects will be based in the South Africa’s Free State province which currently does not have renewable projects constructed as part of the REIPPP Programme, while the first wind project will be in the KwaZulu-Natal province and two wind projects are in the Western Cape.
Globeleq, a CDC and Norfund backed leading independent power provider in Africa, has more than 1,400 MW operational power plants in 28 locations across six countries, with a further 305 MW in construction and more than 500 MW due to reach financial close in 2021.
The company is also leading the way in nascent clean energy technology, such as the Cuamba Solar project in Mozambique, that helps meet the demand in regions with insufficient power, ensuring safe power solutions.

The project award, announced by the South Africa’s Department of Minerals, Resources and Energy (DMRE), comes as world leader convene at COP26 to act on tackling the urgent climate challenge. Globeleq’s role in the Consortium will be bolstered by CDC’s pledge to invest £3 billion of climate finance, over the next five years, to support emerging economies in Africa and Asia to combat the climate emergency. The clean projects in South Africa additionally demonstrate the UK Government’s commitment, through CDC and Globeleq, to promoting energy equity and supporting clean and renewable power infrastructure in South Africa and in other nations across the continent.
